Making the Switch

We've decided to switch to cloth diapers. Chana has the most incredible diaper rash ever. She has sores "down there" and cries when we wipe her off and put the cream on. It's just so sad that it hurts her so much. Dovid has a little bit of a rash, but not nearly as bad as Chana's. So, cloth diapers. Here is a list of what we bought:

20 bumGenius! 3.0 One-Size Pocket Diapers (10 White, 2 Blossom, 3 Zinnia, 2 Twilight, & 3 Moonbeam) from Wild Flower Diapers

1 Cotton Prefold Diapers Package (Size Medium, Natural/Unbleached) from Diaper Junction

2 Bummis Super Snap Wraps (Size Medium) from Diaper Junction

2 Bummis Super Whisper Wraps (Size Medium, 1 Froggy Pond & 1 Flower) from Diaper Junction

1 FREE Baby Legs by bumGenius! (Hopscotch Jack) from Diaper Junction

3 Flannel Baby Wipes (15 pack, White) from Amazon

1 bumGenius! Diaper Sprayer from Amazon

1 Safety 1st Easy Saver Diaper Pail from Amazon

2 Thirsties Diaper Pail Liners from Amazon

1 Kushies "On The Go" Wet Bag (Large, 2-Pack, Boy Prints) from Amazon

Can you see I had fun? :-) I'm not even going to tell you how much it cost, but I'll tell you this...I would spend more on disposable diapers in a year than the total for all of these cloth diapers and accessories. Also, I'm going to be using cloth wipes instead of disposable wipes, and that saves me about $12 a month in addition to the savings on diapers. I'm totally psyched, and you guys are welcome to use what I bought as a guide to what you should get if you decide to make the switch (or just go with cloth from the start, like I should have done). Of course if you're only having 1, you probably only need 10 bumGenius diapers, and you probably wouldn't need any extra Bummis. I may need to buy more cloth wipes, but we'll see how these do. And I want to give a big thank you to Molly for helping me with this!!

  1. never commented here before but I've followed with you from Nancy's and Molly's blogs. That is an incredible stash. I love my Bumgenius diapers. Molly helped me decide what I should get and she was so right.

  4. I know next to nothing about cloth diapers so it will be interesting to learn how it works out for you. I hope they help your twins feel better!

Also, thanks so much for your progesterone tips that you left at my place. I really appreciate it!

  5. Thanks for your comment on my blog - 8/8 is really a great birthday! Full of luck and abundance!

Glad to meet another twin mama - if you ever need a listening ear, I'm here!!

I use cloth, too - I'm pretty exclusively enamored of fuzzy bunz. They're easy, slim, and awesome!

  6. Oh, and make sure you use Charlie's soap, if you can get it. It really cuts down on the soap buildup (and thus any odor).

    :o)

  7. You'll love cloth diapering! I CD Ava, and it's wonderful. You have a great stash! I second the PP comment on Charlies Soap. It's the best, and no soap build up or stink at all.

  9. If I ever get to the point where I need them (ie - actually have a baby), I know I will use cloth. I haven't done a lot of research on it at this point, but it's good to know where to start looking.

  10. Great to know that I've had such an influence! I guess there's that kind of appeal that if WE can do it, everyone can.

Just to warn you: you may need to get some sort of cream to treat the rash if it doesn't get better right away. But once you treat the rash, it probably won't come back and you'll have two healthier bums overall.

  11. I think this is a fantastic idea! I'm really considering cloth diapering when/if we ever have a little one. If you're handy with a sewing machine, there are also some great patterns online and you can buy the supplies to make your own. Good luck with the change!

  13. Way to go Elana! Did anyone tell you airing out a sore bum is the best medicine. I had a lot of naked baby time whenever a rash appeared. I used cloth diapers on my twins back in the day, but we had diaper service. My kids couldn't even wear disposables for a day if we went on a trip.

  14. Nystatin was awesome. Ellie was on antibiotic and had a bad rash popping up. The dr. called in nystatin and it cleared her up in a day. Call the pedi if you need to get a script. Then hopefully the cd will help further problems. I've been thinking about it for Ellie for some time, but Simon says no, and my MIL and my mom are both against it. No support here, which makes it harder.
