6 Week Checkup

According to my OB, I'm in perfect health. My incision is gorgeous and my cervix is perfect. :-) But, she doesn't want me getting pregnant for the next year, for obvious reasons--emergency C-Section, twin pregnancy, etc. The only issue is birth control. My husband thinks I've gone totally insane. He's basically thinking "we couldn't get pregnant on our own for two years...what makes you think it'll just happen this year?" I agree with him in theory, but my doctor (and I) think it's prudent not to tempt fate. We do need to get clearance from our rabbi, however, before doing anything. Basically, my doctor wants to put in a copper IUD, because it shouldn't affect my hormones at all. Any thoughts?

  1. Fate never has a good sense of humor. Better to be safe than sorry and get the implant.

  2. agreed with Celia. It's easy enough to get a heter for birth control, especially since there are serious medial implications if you get pregnant right away again. I thought I couldn't get pregnant, and now I have my wonderful 8 month old :) I assume Rabbi M has enough sense to listen to medical advice, especially when your health could be at stake.

  3. So glad your appt went well. And glad you didn't get yelled at for your Sunday fun!

I have a copper IUD. This is the 2nd time I went with one. I really love being hormone free. And when I had it removed I was able to begin trying to get pregnant immediately (and was fortunate enough to be KU'ed in less than 3 mos).

The insertion can be horrific or super easy. The first time I had it in it was awful, I swore I WOULD NEVER DO IT AGAIN. But after I had Baby K and discussed it with my OB she told me that she inserts them but does a "cervicle block" first. If your Dr. will do this (a simple shot of numbing meds into your cervix) then I would TOTALLY recommend you go this route. It is good for up to 10 years, but you can have it out whenever you want.

  4. My only recommendation is make sure you aren't allergic to copper before you get it, we had a patient come in and get one, turns out she was allergic and ended up hospitalized due to the reaction that night. But overall I hear good things.

  5. I'm with you. I hate birth control for several reasons, but I need to give my body time to heal and time for us to get finances better. I have no suggestion, since I'm in the same boat as you. But I was thinking about looking into the IUD myself. But I've got pros and cons list...medical reasons on both.
